Abstract
An examination of how Montreal's The Gazette, Le Devoir and La Press, and Toronto's The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star, covered the so-called Sir George Williams Affair, also known as the Anderson Affair, in 1969. In late 1968 and early 1969, Sir George Williams University (now part of Concordia University) was rocked by accusiations of institutional racism when a white biology professor, Perry Anderson, was accused of distributing unfair grades to Black students from the Caribbean, based on their race. When the university found Anderson innocent of the charges, students occupied the school's computer room. When police were call in on February 12th, a riot broke out and the university's computers were destroyed. Ninety-seven students were arrested. The author examines how the newspapers covered the event.
