Abstract |
The first ice hockey game took place on March 3, 1875, at Montreal’s Victoria Skating Rink. In 1893, Governor General Lord Stanley of Preston donated a silver cup to be awarded annually to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. The team from the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) won the first Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, later re-named the Stanley Cup. The author outlines the history of the evolution of hockey between 1875 and 1893, and the prominent role played by such teams as the Montreal Victorias, the Quebec Hockey Club, and the MAAA.
