Contested Terrain: The Politics of Public Memory in Montreal, 1891-1930
|
Abstract |
Between 1891 and 1930, Montreal's French- and English-speaking communities struggled to negotiate and commemorate their respective memories in the public monuments of the city. The author argues that Montreal's linguistic elites used historic monuments to stake claim to specific places, streets and neighbourhoods. However, between these positions other ethnic groups strove to stake their own claims to representation. Among these other groups, Irish Catholics struggled to negotiate their own historical narratives.
