Abstract |
An examination of the editorial attitude of the French-language Montreal newspaper Le Devoir towards Jews and Jewish immigration in the first half of the twentieth century. According to the author, the newspaper's founder, Henri Bourassa, despite his right-wing conservative views, denounced intolerance towards Jewish people. The author argues that the editorial position changed following the early 1930s when the paper fell under the direction of Georges Pelletier and Omer Héroux. From that period, the paper adopted an anti-Semitic and anti-Jewish immigration editorial policy which lasted, the author contends, until the late 1940s.
