Factors Affecting the Career Decisions of Youth in the Italian Community

Abstract |
The author surveyed the pattern of career development of high school-aged youths of Italian origin in Montreal in the mid-1970s. Several variables related to social and family background, school experience, and attitudes towards self, work, and the future were examined in terms of their impact on occupational preferences and educational intentions. His findings indicated that a majority of students, especially males, expressed strong preferences for high status occupations and intended to pursue their education on a full time basis. Program of study, sex, achievement level, failure in school, and parent support for education were found to be the most significant variables affecting career decisions. Socio-economic origin and attitudes towards self, work, and the future, on the other hand, played a minor role in determining future aspirations.
