Abstract |
The Montreal Free Library, also known as the Gesù Free Library, was located at 146 Bleury Street. It was the first "free circulating" library in the city. The idea of establishing this Montreal library originated in the spring of 1889 during an afternoon tea at the Queen’s Hall when three women – Mrs. Thomas McCarthy, Miss A.T. Sadlier and Miss M.J. Gethin – proposed the idea of an institution that would provide the free loan of books for the use of the city’s English-speaking Catholic community. The idea was taken up by a committee of prominent Catholic ladies and gentlemen, and supported by the League of the Sacred Heart, as a means to "counteract the evils occasioned by pernicious books and newspapers." This book outlines the rules and regulations of the library, as well as lists its books for loan, circa 1895.
