Abstract |
The author examines patients' admission records of the Montreal General Hospital between 1823, the year the hospital opened, and the 1860s. Many of the patients, especially in the early years, were Irish immigrants. The records throw interesting sidelights on the social history of English-speaking Montreal, including the types of diseases patients suffered and diagnoses made, patients ability (or inability) to pay, types of operations performed, and mortality rates.
