| Abstract |
Taking the perspective of a walker moving through the landscape of Montreal in different eras, the author traces a literary history of familiar crossings and intersections – St. Laurent Boulevard, the Mile End, Jacques Cartier Bridge, Mount Royal. Examined are the works of F.R. Scott, A.M. Klein and Malcolm Reid – cultural translators of the 1950s and 1960s – and contemporary writers such as Gail Scott, Erin Mouré, Jacques Brault and Emile Ollivier. The author argues that the contemporary writer is no longer classified as “Québécois” or “anglo-Montrealer” or “immigrant” or “ethnic”, but as a citizen of a mixed and cosmopolitan city.
