An intellectual history of Canadian business journals and their assessment of commerce at the turn of the twentieth century. The author examines the perspective of Canadian businessmen who thought (according to the journals) that the primary concern of government ought to be the defence of their interests. The author includes chapters on the attitudes of businessmen towards competition and the free market, tariff protection, unions and the workingman's welfare.
