Abstract |
The German-born Catholic theologian Gregory Baum (b.1923)taught theological ethics at McGill University and is associated with the Jesuit Centre Justice et Foi in Montreal. Baum explains that after moving to Quebec in the late 1980s, he discovered the Montreal-based Karl Polanyi Institute and Polanyi's socio-economic thought critical of the unregulated market system, that differs from Marxism, attends to cultural and ethical issues, and reveals a certain affinity with Catholic social teaching. Baum argues that Polanyi offers a theoretical foundation for the social economy and community efforts to reform society from the bottom up.
