| Abstract |
The author analyzes how Lower and Upper Canadians in the period 1790-1850 articulated ideas of the self in relation to concepts provided by the Enlightenment. In terms of Lower Canada, she analyzes how English-speakers viewed themselves and how they viewed French-speakers and the corruption of France in the era of the French Revolution, the Terror, and the Napoleonic Wars. The English language, the English-speakers believed, was the international language of commerce, replacing French, the outdated language of diplomacy.
