Abstract |
The Canadian Handicrafts Guild (CHG), established in Montreal in 1905 and incorporated in 1906, evolved from the late nineteenth-century Home Arts and Handicrafts Committee of the Montreal branch of the Women’s Art Association of Canada. The CHG was founded by Montrealers Alice Peck (1855–1943) and May Phillips (1856–1937). The goal of the CHG was to preserve and market traditional home crafts and ran the retail and exhibition store "Our Handicraft Shop" on Peel Street. The author examines the links between the Irish Dun Emer Guild and the CHG in the early twentieth century.
