Abstract |
The author outlines the settlement and unification of the United Townships of Stoneham and Tewkesbury. These two townships were originally settled by British, Irish and Scottish immigrants at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and by French Canadians towards the end of the nineteenth century. The two townships were united in 1800. Philip Toosey, an Anglican priest from Stonham, Suffolk, England, named half of the united township after his birthplace, and Kenelm Chandler, a retired British Army officer, named the other half of the united township after his birthplace, Tewkesbury, in England.
