Abstract |
An analysis of data from the 1996 Canadian census on the education of the adult population of the Francophone community, the English-speaking (mother tongue) community and the main other ethnic communities of Quebec. The analysis is based on data on the Quebec population aged 15 and over, broken down by mother tongue, sex, age and highest level of education attained. According to the analysis, 81.9 percent of the Francophone community attained at least a grade 9 level of education, compared to 89.6 percent of the English-speaking community; 64.2 percent of the Francophone community had obtained a secondary level diploma compared with 71.1 percent of the English-speaking community; and 18,2 percent of the Francophone community were in or had completed a university degree compared to 31 percent of the English-speaking community. Among the ethnic communities, the Jewish and Arab communities had the highest percentage of their population in or completed university, with 40.5 percent of the Jewish community and 46.4 percent of the Arab community.
