Abstract |
The Sir George Williams Affair, also known as the Anderson Affair, the Sir George Williams Riot or the Computer Riot, was one of the largest student riots in Canadian history. In late 1968 and early 1969, Sir George Williams University (now part of Concordia University) was rocked by accusiations of institutional racism when a white biology professor, Perry Anderson, was accused of distributing unfair grades to Black students based on their race. When the university found Anderson innocent of the charges, students occupied the school's computer room. When police were call in, a riot broke out and the university's computers were destroyed. Ninety-seven students were arrested, forty-seven of whom were Black. The author describes the aftermath and outcome of the affair.
