| Abstract |
Edmund James Flynn (1847-1927), the member of the Legislative Assembly for Gaspé, succeeded Louis-Olivier Taillon as the leader of the Conservative Party and became the tenth Premier of Quebec in 1896 when the latter went to Ottawa to become postmaster general. In the general election called for May 11, 1897, Flynn's Conservatives lost power to the Liberals under Félix-Gabriel Marchand. It was the last time the Conservative party held power in the province. In 1936, the party merged with the Action Libérale Nationale to form the Union Nationale.
