Abstract |
Drummondville was first settled in 1815 by demobilized British soldiers from the War of 1812, under the leadership of Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick George Heriot (1786-1844). The purpose of the town was to provide a home for 300 demobilized war veterans and their families and to guard the Saint-François River against future American attacks. In the 1830s, Francophones begin moving into the area, and soon become the majority in the town. The author outlines the economic history of the town.
