Abstract |
Carrollcroft, a cut granite and fieldstone house in the Italianate style in the town of Stanstead in the Eastern Townships, was built for Charles Carroll Colby (1827-1907) and his family in 1859. The American-born (Derby, Vermont) Colby was a lawyer, businessman and federal politician and Cabinet Minister. The author reviews the historical context of the years 1850 to 1860 from a local, regional and national viewpoint.
