Abstract |
Why did medical students remove corpses from burial sites in Quebec for nearly six decades (c. 1820-1883)? The author examines this necessary undertaking and sheds light on an original and little-known aspect of medical education in Quebec and the macabre world of nineteenth-century medical students. Montreal became a hybrid medical environment where French- and English-speaking medical institutions coexisted, and where bodysnatching was an essential element of medical training for both linguistic groups.
