The French-Canadian Under British Rule, 1760-1800
|
Abstract |
A study of the economic and social changes which swept through Quebec after the transfer from French to British rule. Includes a chapter on the effects of the Loyalist migration to Quebec following the American War on Independence. The author argues that the Quebec Act of 1774, far from being the "Magna Carta of French-Canadian liberties", as some historians tried to argue, was in reality a point behind which French-Canadian liberty could not be forced to retreat.
