Abstract |
The author examines the function of place in the work of Yiddish poet Jacob Isaac Segal (1896-1954). Segal immigrated to Montreal in 1910 from the Ukrainian shtetl of Korets. He began writing in the local Montreal Yiddish daily in 1916 and by 1926 he had already published four books of modernist poetry. The author examines Segal's poetry about Montreal, and compares it with his writing about the shtetl.
