Abstract |
An examination of businessman Herbert Browne Ames' Montreal municipal career from 1898 to 1904, and the philosophy and extent of his reform attempts. In 1897, Ames published The City Below The Hill, a sociological and statistical analysis of the working class in Montreal's Griffintown and Pointe St. Charles neighbourhoods. Over half the people living in these areas at that time were Anglophones.
