Arvida au Saguenay : naissance d’une ville industrielle
|
Abstract |
The word “Arvida” comes from the first two letters of the first, middle and family name of the 1920s American businessman who started the aluminum industry in this region of Quebec – ARthur VIning DAvis. Davis founded Arvida in 1927 as a model town for working families. The author argues that Arvida is a true microcosm of the birth of an industrial city and the development of the community identity of its population. He is particularly interested in the local labor movement which reached its peak during the famous wildcat strike of 1941, demonstrating that the struggle for collective action marked a turning point in the development of the community consciousness.
