Title
Arts et Métiers : Le Club universitaire de Montréal
Abstract
The Montreal University Club was founded in 1907 to provide a meeting place for graduates. The club moved to 2047 Mansfield Street in 1912, in a building designed by prominent Montreal architect Percy Erskine Nobbs (1875-1964), in collaboration with George Taylor Hyde (1879-1944). The interior of the building is also the work of Nobbs. The author points out that this interior, the most complete that remains today of Nobbs' work, has an absolutely unique value: it is the finest example in Quebec of the Canadian Arts and Crafts movement. The University Club put the building up for sale in 2017, and left the premises in 2018.
