Title
A Case-Study in Amateur Conflict: The Athletic War in Canada, 1906-1908
Abstract
In 1906, the Toronto-based Canadian Amateur Athletic Union and the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (M.A.A.A.) came into conflict on the question of whether amateurs could compete against professionals and still retain their amateur status. The M.A.A.A. responded by forming the Amateur Athletic Federation of Canada, claiming to represent all of Canada but in reality representing opposition in Montreal to the athletic authorities in Toronto. The two sides agreed in 1908 to merge into a new Amateur Athletic Union of Canada.
