Vagabonds and Scoundrels: History on the Line in Old Missisquoi County
|
Abstract |
According to the author, the border between Missisquoi County and Vermont and New York was crossed "an incalculable number of time" from the early 1780s and throughout the nineteenth century "for reasons of settlement, economics and trade, family ties and freedom." Among those who came to Missisquoi in the early 1800s were counterfeiters who copied money of different banks in the United States. The author also recounts how the border was crossed by run-away U.S. slaves, and by Irish-American Fenians.
