Abstract |
The Ontario-born Casey Albert Wood (1856-1942) obtained a doctor of medicine and master of surgery (MD CM) from the University Bishop's College in 1877, and a doctor of civil law from Bishop's in 1903. In 1905 the Montreal-based Bishops Medical School was absorbed by the McGill University Faculty of Medicine and Bishop's graduates were able to obtain ad eundnem McGill MD CM degrees: Wood was awarded his in 1906. By 1886 Wood had decided to make ophthalmology and otology his specialty, beginning further studies in New York and Europe before settling in Chicago. As well as being a widely known ophthalmologist and ornithologist, Wood was a prolific author, translator, editor and bibliophile. Wood maintained his ties to McGill over the years and bestowed many of his book collections on the University. His books on birds and zoology helped establish the Blacker-Wood collection of ornithology at the McGill University Library.
