The Law of Servants and the Servants of Law : Judicial Regulation of Labour Relations in Montreal, 1830-1845
|
Abstract |
Labour relations in Montreal began to change as the city industrialized in the early nineteenth century. Courts came to play an increasingly important role in resolving labour disputes between master and servant. The author points out that while the law historically favoured the strict contractual and socio-economic interests of masters, courts began to enforce the reciprocal duties owed by employers to their workers.
