Title
The Canadian Rebellion Losses Bill of 1849 in British Politics
Abstract
The passage of the Rebellion Losses Bill in 1849 by the colonial government led to the burning of the Parliament Building, then located in Montreal, by English-speaking Quebecers. The author examines the bill from the standpoint of its impact on British politics. Attempts were made to have the bill vetoed in British Parliament, thus calling into question the idea of responsible government and imperial authority.
