Abstract |
The Quebec City-born Michael Joseph Ahern (1844-1914) graduated from the medical faculty of the Université Laval in 1868, and began teaching at the university in 1878. In 1885 he was appointed chief surgeon at Quebec City's Hôtel-Dieu hospital. He had long been a defender and promoter of the theories of Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister and their adheriance to sterialization and disinfection, and as head of clinical teaching, Ahern put antiseptic and aseptic methods firmly in place at the hospital.
