|
Abstract |
A biograohy of the Montreal-born artist Prudence Heward (1896-1947), a member of the short-lived Beaver Hall Group of painters, formed in Montreal in May 1920 by artists who had met while studying art at a school run by Art Association of Montreal. The author divides her study into the periods of Heward's life--beginnings, the twenties, the thirties, and her early passing. Heward's body of work was dominated by portraits of women and influenced by the new ideas and aesthetic methods which established modern ways of thinking and producing art in the early twentieth century. The author includes most of Heward's most famous paintings in the book, as well as a list of exhibitions in which her works appeared and information on and memories of her friends and family members.
