Title |
La scolarisation au Bas-Canada, 1826-1859 : une interaction État-communautés locales
|
Abstract |
Examines the growth of public schooling and an educated populace in Lower Canada from 1826 to 1859, with emphasis on the role of the state as well as local communities, including parishes and townships, in this development. The author points out that there were tensions between state and community, based in part on resistance to taxation and the difficulties of catering to both the Anglophone and Francophone populations, but the school system that developed was the result of interaction and cooperation between local and central authorities.
