Abstract |
The Brownsburg, Argenteuil county-born Silas Huntington Carpenter (1854-1916) joined the City of Montreal police force in 1880 as a constable, was promoted sergeant in 1882, joined the Canadian Secret Service Agency in 1890, and was appointed the first Chief of Montreal's Bureau of Detectives in 1896, a position he held until 1912. The author outlines some of the innovations that Carpenter introduced to the city's police force, including increased cooperation between law enforcement agencies in Canada and the United States, the Alphonse Bertillon system of biometric identification, which involved the taking of bodily measurements and the description of particular markings or scars, and the expanded use of photographs of criminals.
