| Abstract |
The Eastern Townships Telephone Company was founded by Carlos Skinner, a Sherbrooke jeweller and watchmaker, in 1878. Originally known as the People's Telephone Company before being re-named the Eastern Townships Telephone Company, the company operated independently in and around Sherbrooke and competed successfully with Bell Telephone. Bell eventually bought out the company in 1953.
