Les musées accessibles au public à Montréal au XIXe siècle : capitalisme culturel et idéal national
|
Abstract |
Two kinds of museums appeared in nineteenth century Montreal – those designed to provide entertainment and those established by learned societies. The former, most prominent after 1850, offered diverse exhibits to a broad range of Montreal’s populace. The latter, reflecting the worldview of the predominantly anglophone elite, catered to a smaller audience, presenting exhibits of natural history, art or Canadian history that emphasized a pan-Canadian ideology of progress through economic and industrial growth.
