Abstract |
Yehuda Kaufman (Even Shemuel) (1886-1976), one of the most accomplished scholars of Jewish studies in the twentieth century, lived in Montreal in the years 1913-1917 and became one of the most important activists in the city's Jewish community. Among other things, he was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Jewish People's Library (Yidishe folks bibliotek), the Jewish People's School (Yidishe folksshule) and the Canadian Jewish Congress. During his Montreal years, Kaufman wrote hundreds of articles for the Montreal Yiddish press. The author surveys his Montreal journalism, and looks carefully at his treatment of Jewish education, the onset of the First World War, and the development of Canadian Jewry. A complete bibliography of his journalism in these years, along with a subject index, is appended.
