Title
Anglicans and the Atlantic World: High Churchmen, Evangelicals and the Quebec Connection
Abstract
A history of the Anglican Church in eighteenth and nineteenth century Quebec, focusing on the imperial and transatlantic ties of its leaders. The author examines the careers of several prominent Quebec Anglicans, including Jacob, Eliza and George Mountain, Jasper Hume Nicolls, Henry Roe, Edmund Willoughby Sewell and Jeffrey Hale. Studied is the emergence during this period of two very different Anglican cultures – one High Church and the other Evangelical – which framed virtually all ecclesiastical questions in Anglican Quebec by the nineteenth century. The author maintains that by the 1850s, Quebec Protestants were not divided along ethnic lines between Irish and English, but between Evangelical and High Church.
