Abstract |
The American-born Charles Bancroft (1788-1834) was a director of the Bank of Montreal, elected to that position in June 1818, eight months after the bank was founded. He was also a nephew and business partner of Horatio Gates (1777-1834), one of the original founders of the Bank of Montreal and its President in 1826 and again from 1832 to 1834. Bancroft was a partner in Horatio Gates and Company, which consisted of Gates, Bancroft and Nathaniel Jones. Jones was also one of Gates' nephews.
