Abstract |
Includes two volumes on the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning, created in 1801 to oversee education in Lower Canada. The author concludes that although initially the Royal Institution represented an attempt to "anglicize" and "Protestantize" the French population of Lower Canada (Quebec), its original aims were soon waylaid. He argues that the Royal Institution could have been used by French Canadians to establish their own schools. The Royal Institution was also responsible for administering James McGill's bequest for McGill University.
