Abstract |
A comparative architectural assessment of two neighbourhood Catholic churches in east-end Montreal. The Church of the Madonna della Difesa (Église de Notre-Dame-de-la-Défense) in Montreal's Little Italy was built by Italian immigrants to the city, specifically those from Molise, to commemorate the apparition of the Madonna in La Difesa, in Casacalenda, Molise. The church was inaugurated in 1919. It is famous for its large cupola and brick façade, and especially its frescos by Guido Nincheri. A particularly well-known fresco depicts Benito Mussolini, painted before the Second World War, commemorating his signing of the Lateran Accords. Église Saint-Édouard's construction started in 1901 and was completed in 1909.
