Title
Rapport synthèse sur les aménagements de Grosse-Île, 1832 à nos jours
Abstract
A history of the construction and use of the Grosse-Île quarantine station below Quebec City. It was established in 1832 as a means to contain a cholera epidemic brought by Irish immigrants to Quebec. In 1847, the island became the burial site of thousands of Irish immigrants fleeing starvation in their homeland caused by the Great Famine, but who contracted typhus onboard ships bringing them to North America. The island is today a National Historic Site, operated by Parks Canada, commemorating the deaths of these Irish immigrants.
