Circonscrire l’œuvre : quelques notes au sujet des encadrements d’œuvres de membres du Groupe de Beaver Hall

Abstract |
The author notes that a small selection of archival sources assembled during the research on the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' 2015 exhibition on the Beaver Hall Group make mention of the frames used for works by A.Y. Jackson (1882–1974), Randolph S. Hewton (1888–1960), and Prudence Heward (1896–1947). Found for the most part in minutes and agendas and in correspondence between artists and institutions, these fragments of information testify to the influence of various individuals, including fellow artists, friends, patrons, collectors, and museum directors. The author points out that one thing that emerges clearly is the fairly insecure status of original artist-made frames, owing evidently in part to changing tastes, but also to the circumstances surrounding the works’ acquisition and exhibition.
