Abstract |
An examination of the political and social tensions in Montreal in the early nineteenth century that erupted into armed conflict in November 1837. The author focuses on the Tory newspaper, the Montreal Herald, and its outspoken opposition to the to the demands for predominance by the Patriotes and to the Melbourne Cabinet's policy of conciliation. The radical Tories in the city organized themselves into an armed socio-political militia, known as the Doric Club, and the author argues that the owner of the Montreal Herald encouraged the switch from a political struggle to an armed struggle.
