Group Behaviour: Exploring the Role of Schools in Shaping English Quebecers' Identity
Abstract
An examination of the role and challenges English language schools in Quebec City face in the transmission of Quebec Anglophone language and culture. The author points out that according to the 2006 Canadian Census, just 1.45 percent of the population in the Quebec City metropolitan area considers English to be their mother tongue, with an additional 0.30 percent claiming both English and French. Even fewer people speak English at home: 1.05 percent claim to speak mainly English at home, while 0.28 percent use both English and French.
