Cold Welcome: Stereotypes and Xenophobia in Early Press Portrayals of Chinese Quebecers

Abstract |
Chinese immigrants to Quebec City began arriving in 1891. They formed a small “Chinatown” on rue St-Vallier. Media coverage of Chinese in Le Soleil, the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph and L’Action Catholique between 1885 and 1949 often contained negative stereotypes, although the Chronicle-Telegraph was more sympathetic to the cause of the city's Chinese community than the French-language press.
