Abstract
William Douw Lighthall’s “Songs of the Great Dominion: Voices from the Forests and Waters, the Settlements and Cities of Canada” (1889) was the first published anthology of Canadian poems. The book was published in London by Walter Scott. Lighthall (1857-1954) was a prominent Montreal lawyer, man of letters and civic leader. The author explains that to understand the nature of Lighthall’s effort, it is important to recognize that the volume was prepared by a patriotic Canadian for production and distribution by a British publisher in order to proclaim the validity of Canada’s literary culture to an international imperial audience. The author outlines how the Lighthall’s book has been portrayed within the canon of Canadian literature.
