Abstract |
The authors point out that the second half of the nineteenth century in Quebec can be divided into two economic cycles: a period of expansion (1851-1873) and a period of contraction (1874-1896), with a corresponding political and social state of euphoria and pessimism. They also point out that the second half of the nineteenth century marked a period in Quebec of transition between the pre-1848 commercial mercantilism, noted for it navigation laws, preferential tariffs and an absence of secondary industries, and the post-1900 industrial economy, noted for its sprawling financial capitalism and characterized by urban life, trade unionism, and social services.
