Title |
Bidimensional Measurement of Acculturation in a Multiethnic Community Sample of First-Generation Immigrants
|
Abstract |
The author uses a bi-dimensional approach to examine acculturation among 109 Anglophone Caribbean, 97 Vietnamese, and 109 Filipino first-generation immigrant adults living in Montreal. Heritage and mainstream cultural orientations were independently assessed in three domains of acculturation: loyalty, behaviour, and situated identity. The author argues that across the three domains and the three groups, the two cultural orientations were largely independent, though in the Vietnamese and Filipino samples heritage group loyalty was positively related to mainstream group loyalty. Overall, the author's results support a bi-dimensional model of acculturation and suggests the value of separately assessing different acculturation domains.
