Abstract |
The author points out that there was no printing or bookstore in New France under the French Regime. The printing press made its appearance in Quebec after the Conquest, with the arrival of printers William Brown (c.1737-1789) and Thomas Gilmore (c.1741-1773) in Quebec City in 1764, and Frenchman Fleury Mesplet (1734-1794) in Montreal in 1776. Between 1764 to 1859, 327 newspapers and periodicals were published in Quebec. The author outlines the technological advances in printing in Quebec until the end of the twentieth century.
