Title
Residence and Language Maintenance in a Multicultural City
Abstract
An examination of how residential patterns in pre-1970 Montreal were related to linguistic background, and how linguistic pluralism was maintained under conditions of constant contact and extensive bilingualism. The author found that mother tongue (French or English) was a far more powerful determinant of ethnic residence than was a language acquired later in life. Bilinguals in each ethnic group tended to locate in areas of the city where their monolingual compatriots were found.
